An alleged leader of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group (DI-MG) who was involved in the deadly bomb attack at the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City in 2023 and a government soldier were killed in a series of armed encounters in Pagayawan, Lanao del Sur.
According to the 1st Infantry Division (1ID), the suspect was identified as alias “Abu Jihad,” the second Maute leader killed in November 2025.
1ID said the troops of the Gagandilan Brigade engaged several members of DI-MG in two separate firefights in Barangay Padas on Saturday, November 15, 2025.
During the exchange of fire, the suspect was killed while two others were arrested.
The military added that one soldier was wounded severely and succumbed later to injuries during evacuation.
Seized from the clash site were an M16 rifle, a caliber .45 pistol, and three improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
“I commend our troops for their swift and disciplined actions that led to the neutralization of Abu Jihad, a key DI-MG sub-leader, and the capture of two individuals. We deeply honor the sacrifice of our fallen comrade, whose courage and service embody the finest ideals of a soldier. The Brigade remains committed to sustained operations to secure Lanao del Sur and prevent the resurgence of DI-MG threats,” 1101st Infantry Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Yasser Bara, said.
“The death of Abu Jihad delivers a significant blow to the DI-MG remnants. Our soldier fought with discipline and valor. His sacrifice will not be in vain, soon the remaining members will be eradicated and terrorism will end in Lanao. I commend our forces for their professionalism and bravery. Despite the loss of one of our soldiers, we remain resolute,” 1ID and Joint Task Force Zampelan Commander, Major General Yegor Rey Barroquillo Jr., added.
