Rice prices in Dagupan City have risen sharply this week, with commercial rice now costing more as supplies tighten following the recent palay harvest.
From the previous ₱750 to ₱780 per 25-kilo sack, prices have climbed to ₱820 to ₱850, marking an increase of ₱2 to ₱4 per kilo in just three days.
“Tumaas na ngayon ang presyo ng bigas. Sabi nila, tataas pa raw kasi nag-ani na ng palay. Mga three months ulit bago mag-aani ng palay,” Ricky Felix, a rice trader, said.
Suppliers have already warned vendors of additional price hikes in the coming weeks. Some consumers have begun buying full sacks of rice to avoid further increases.
“Apektado kaming bumibili pero siyempre kailangan bumili, kaya sinusunod lang namin presyo nila,” Teddy de Guzman, a shopper, said.
Imported rice is also becoming harder to find. Many stalls at the Malimgas Public Market reported that they have had no imported stocks for several days.
“Wala na kaming mabili rin kasi na imported. Wala na kami maibigay sa mga bumibili. Naghahanap kami ng supplier pero wala na talaga,” Rowenna Tucay, a vendor, said.
According to the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG), price increases are typical after the harvest season as farmers begin replanting.
“Sa bigas, makita natin ang disconnection sa presyo… medyo malayo na,” Engr. Rosendo So, SINAG chairman, said.
Despite the latest price jump, SINAG clarified that the country’s rice supply remains sufficient and that prices should not soar to previous years’ highs, when rates exceeded ₱60 per kilo.
As of November 19, 2025, local commercial rice ranges from ₱35 to ₱55 per kilo, while imported rice sells for ₱55 to ₱60 per kilo, based on Malimgas Public Market data.
