A 55-year-old man who reportedly ran amok in Iligan City was killed by responding police officers while his 14-year-old niece also died after she was hit by a stray bullet during the operation.

According to the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10), the officers responded to a call for assistance after the man, armed with a bolo and a scythe, ran amok and chased his nephew in the area on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

The suspect was believed to be under the influence of alcohol when he became aggressive.

It was reportedly not the first time it happened because the man allegedly hacked a relative in the past.

“Dili ni first time nga nahitabo kay naa napud incident before nga naa siyay relative nga gitigbas,” PRO-10 Spokesperson, Major Joann Navarro, said.

Despite verbal warnings from responding police personnel, the suspect continued to be unruly and allegedly attacked one of them who stumbled and slipped on the muddy ground.

The officer sustained hack wounds in the back and forearm.

In defense, the officers opened fire and hit the suspect. His niece was also hit accidentally in the chest by a stray bullet.

The suspect and his niece were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

The police officer who was injured is receiving treatment, as of this writing.

PRO-10 said an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify any possible lapses.

The firearms involved have been turned over for ballistic examination, and the responding officers will undergo the procedures required.

“PRO10 remains committed to the highest standards of professionalism and accountability, and we will take appropriate action should the investigation establish negligence or violations of protocol. We also recognize the courage of our personnel who faced a dangerously armed assailant while protecting the community,” PRO-10 Director, Brigadier General Christopher Abrahano, said.

“Ang pagpasaka og criminal case depende na kana sa pamilya sa minor and sa administrative aspect atong tan-awon kung appropriate ba ang actions sa police ug nakasunod ba sila sa protocol,” Navarro added.
