More than 10 people were injured after a closed van truck crashed into the modern passenger jeepney they were riding in Barangay Puerto, Cagayan de Oro City on Thursday, November 20, 2025.
Police said the truck driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle after its brakes reportedly malfunctioned. The truck continued moving downhill until it crashed into the approaching jeepney.
The impact caused the truck to spin and fall into a canal while the passengers of the jeepney sustained injuries and were brought to the hospital for treatment. The jeepney driver was unharmed.
“Kaluy-an nuon wala man pud hinuon so far sa akong nahibal-an nga nagrabehan gyud nga pwede makabsan sa kinabuhi, kaluy-an mga minor lang ang mga injury, mga pasa lang, samad, mga ana lang,” Traffic Enforcement Unit-Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (TEU-COCPO) Investigator, Patrolman Jollimer Henterone, said.
Authorities believe the truck driver dozed off while driving but he denied the allegation, saying it was unlikely for him to fall asleep as they had traveled from General Santos City and stopped in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon the other night to sleep. He added that it was only the following day that they continued their trip going to Misamis Oriental.
“Hinaot unta nga mapasaylo ko nila kay unsaon man gyud nga wala man nako tuyua unya ikaduha gihuna-huna baya nako daan nga pamilyado baya ko syempre ga-amping gyud ko sa akong pag-drive kay panginabuhian baya nako na,” the truck driver said.
The truck driver was taken into police custody after the incident and may face charges for reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property and multiple physical injury.
Meanwhile, the jeepney that had blocked the road was moved to the side to prevent traffic buildup.
Police reminded motorists to exercise caution when driving.
“Unta maghinay-hinay lang ta sa dalan samot na nga diri ta sa Upper Puerto mga panaog nga portion so og gikan ta sa ibabaw munaog ta unta maghinay-hinay lang ta kay naa gyud portion sa atoang mga dalan nga basa so mao ni nga delikado gyud siya,” Henterone added.
