Two persons from Barangay Lawaan 3 (Tres) in Talisay City, Cebu died due to leptospirosis in the third week of November 2025.
A mother is in grief because of the death of her only child due to leptospirosis on November 18, 2025.
Their residence in Purok Saging, Barangay Lawaan 3 is among flood-struck areas during Typhoon Tino’s onslaught on November 4, 2025.
Three weeks after Typhoon Tino, the area has remained muddy and that clearing operation is ongoing.
According to Marissa Catubay, the mother, her son Jomarie did a cleanup of their house and decided to clean up other houses for a fee.
It was learned that the barangay health center has distributed medicines against leptospirosis, but Catubay admits her son refused to drink the medicines.
Catubay said she regrets not compelling her son the intake of prophylaxis.
The incident is similar to what happened to their 39-year-old neighbor who succumbed to the complications of leptospirosis on November 21, 2025, Catubay added.
Barangay Lawaan 3 Chairman Frederick Marababol said that aside from the two who died, another three patients are at the hospital for leptospirosis cases, as of this writing.
Marababol said that they have intensified information drives on leptospirosis and the distribution of medicines, especially that inclement weather brings rains again, and that waterways overflowing leading to another flooding is highly possible.
Further, Marababol mentioned that because of the barangay’s flood monitoring system and public address system, no casualty was reported during Typhoon Tino’s onslaught despite the massive flooding that struck at least 1,200 houses in Barangay Lawaan 3.
At least 300 houses were washed out, he added, and that the families have remained at the evacuation center.
Relief assistance has reached the barangay, such as from the Municipality of Polomolok in South Cotabato.
