The San Fernando El Rey Parish Church in Liloan, Cebu has reopened a month after it was closed for reconsecration.

The church reopened on Sunday, November 23, 2025. The ceremony for the reconsecration started on November 3, 2025.

For 20 days, at dawn, prayers were offered at various barangays of Liloan. On November 22, 2025, penitential rites were carried out. Parishioners took confession and general absolution, as part of the reconsecration of the church.

Cebu Archbishop Alberto (Abet) Uy led the reopening and reconsecration Mass with Msgr. Juan Jose (Jojo) Dosado, episcopal vicar.

The church was packed with parishioners on reopening day.

The church was closed temporarily after the killing of a woman inside its premises.

The suspect in the slay of the woman is found to be her own husband.

The couple was reportedly in domestic trouble, based on the account of their own son.

A closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of San Fernando El Rey Parish taken morning on October 24, 2025 saw the couple seated at the rearmost portion of the church. Later, the two had a verbal tussle. The two stood up, the man hit the woman and strangled her. The woman fell on the floor.

A few months back, the suspect was imprisoned in Negros Occidental for violation of Republic Act 9262, or the  Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) Act, based on a complaint filed by his wife.

The church was closed temporarily based on an order issued by the Achdiocese of Cebu.

The closure gave way to the rite of reparation and the offering of prayers, after the incident desecrated the church.
