A committee of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Davao del Norte has approved a resolution that seeks to oppose the franchise renewal of the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative, Inc. (NORDECO).
According to a report by GMA Super Radyo Davao, seven board members voted in favor while five others voted against, which allowed the resolution to get passed at the committee level.
Board member David Uy filed the legislative measure in October 2025 after receiving complaints from residents of Samal Island over what they described as poor service from NORDECO.
The resolution cited Republic Act 12144, a law that expands the franchise area of the Davao Light and Power Company (Davao Light) to include parts of Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro for 25 years.
Representatives from NORDECO and Davao Light were invited during the committee meeting. NORDECO objected to the resolution, claiming that it violates constitutional provisions against monopolies in public utilities.
NORDECO reportedly sent a letter to legislators of Davao del Norte, but Uy criticized the cooperatives for what he described as inconsistent statements.
NORDECO has yet to issue a comment, as of this writing.
