A 17-year-old boy was found dead on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, after he was reportedly swept away by strong current at a creek in General Santos City.

The boy was found naked and with multiple injuries in the face. He was stuck in tree roots and recovered by rescuers beside the creek in Sitio Pao Pao, Barangay Sinawal.

The boy reportedly went missing the other night after he was reportedly carried away by the water afternoon on Monday, December 1.

According to reports, the boy went swimming with five other church companions when the water at the creek suddenly swelled. Two of the boy’s companions managed to escape, but he and three others were trapped by the rising waters.

Those trapped attempted to cross by using a tree branch as support, but the boy was unable to hold on because he was carrying a plastic bag containing their cellphones, causing him to be swept away by the current.

“Kani siya ang wala nakagunit sa kahoy kay naggunit siya og cellophane nga sulod sa ilang mga cellphones,” Barangay Apopong Councilman Jun Lacea said.

The boy’s father said he had warned his son no to go out before the incident happened.

“Giingnan nako siya ayaw laag. Kay matulog ko. Oo pang magkuha ko og gulay. Naa diay kauban. Kauban sa simbahan katung choir. Katung lima nga kauban. Choir gihapon sa simbahan. Wala ko kabalo nga katung gulay diay gibalon tu nila didto,” boy’s father, Randy Cerezo, said.

The local government is set to provide assistance to the family.

The City Disaster Risk and Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) said there was no rain in the city proper at that time, but water surges were reported at other major rivers in the city due to heavy rains.

A video taken in Barangay Labangal also showed floodwaters rushing down a dike, which alarmed residents. However, no one was reported hurt.

“Hindi man umuulan dito sa atin sa siyudad pero doon sa mga headwaters ng ating major ilog umuulan….wag tayong magtiwala, magkompiyansa,” CDRRMO Head, Dr. Bong Dacera, said.

Meanwhile, several vehicles were stranded after floodwaters from the mountains reached the road in Barangay Suli, Kiamba, Sarangani.

A house was also damaged during a landslide in Purok Pag-asa.

In Maitum, Sarangani, students of Malalag National High School waded through floodwaters on their way home after their school was inundated.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the bad weather condition experienced in Mindanao was due to the effects of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
