Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy has postponed the opening of Pasko de Oro, one of the annual Christmas activities in the city, due to a reported security threat.
One of the supposed highlights during the event was the lighting of the colorful Christmas lights around the City Hall and Gaston Park.
Uy explained in his message during the flag raising ceremony on Monday, December 1, 2025, that the postponement was necessary to prioritize the safety and order of the city.
“Hinaut inyo akong masabtan kay naay dako kaayo nga mahinungdanon ug mismo atong giproteksyonan ang seguridad sa katawhan ug ang kahusay sa atong dakbayan,” Uy said.
Uy also asked for the public’s understanding, especially to those who were anticipating the activity.
However, he assured residents that the event will proceed in the coming days.
According to the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO), they did not recommend raising the city’s security level as no threats were directly monitored.
However, COCPO added that there are other sources that may have provided intelligence information to the mayor, which they are currently validating.
“Considering nga City Mayor is repository sa nagkalain-laing nga intelligence information daghan ang mohatag kaniya. Rest assured nga kana nga information dili na gikan ni Cagayan de Oro City Police Office. Apan naa ta’y nadawat nga impormasyon for validation,” COCPO Spokesperson, Capt. Emilita Simon, said.
COCPO assured the public that the police remain ready to respond to any security threats, especially during the holiday season.
