The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has discovered unfinished bridges in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, which were declared completed in 2022.

DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon visited Siargao Island to inspect ongoing infrastructure projects in the island and determine ways to speed up construction.

The visit also follows the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to check and assess the condition of infrastructure projects across the country.

During his visit, Dizon expressed frustration when he found out that some bridges in Maasin and Asinan in Pilar town, which began construction in 2021, remain unfinished despite being reportedly declared completed in 2022.

Dizon was also disappointed to discover that a flood control project in Barangay Tuburan, Del Carmen town was far from complete.

DPWH said the report indicated that the project was 95 percent complete, but inspection revealed that only about 35 percent of the work had been accomplished.

DPWH’s top official ordered immediate measures to fast-track the completion of the projects while an investigation is underway into the causes of the delays and the contractor responsible, who is reportedly linked to a congressman in the province.
