A 42-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing to death a councilor in Marihatag, Surigao del Sur.
Police identified the victim as Gerry Campos, 53, a councilor of Marihatag and a resident of Barangay Sta. Cruz.
According to the Police Regional Office-Caraga (PRO-13), the incident occurred around 300 meters from the police station.
Based on investigation, the victim got off his vehicle and walked toward a gas station when the suspect appeared and stabbed him several times early morning on Saturday, December 6, 2025.
The victim sustained stab wounds in the abdomen. He died shortly after he was brought to the Marihatag District Hospital.
Recovered from the crime scene were a long knife and two pairs of slippers owned by the victim and the suspect.
Police launched a hot pursuit and arrested the suspect.
Authorities are still investigating the incident to determine the motive.
The local government has extended its sympathies to the bereaved family and paid tribute to Campos through a formal draping of the Philippine flag to honor and recognize his dedication to public service.
“A leader, a man of compassion, and a devoted public servant, Hon. Campos faithfully served the people of Marihatag with integrity and dedication. His legacy of service and commitment to local governance will forever remain in the hearts of the Marihatagnons,” the local government said in a Facebook post.
