Authorities rescued two boys who were trapped in a creek that swelled suddenly due to rising floodwaters in Barangay Bunguiao, Zamboanga City afternoon on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
Residents searched the area after receiving information that two boys, 14 and 15 years old, had been stranded in the creek. They were found later standing on top of large rocks in the middle of the creek.
Residents, rescuers, and barangay officials tried to use a rope to pull the boys to safety before the water level rose further. The rope was tied to a tree and thrown toward the boys, but they failed to catch it.
The barangay chairman decided to carry the boys on his back while holding the rope.
Authorities confirmed that there were actually three individuals swept by the water –an 18-year-old motorcycle rider who managed to escape and the two boys.
The boys were swimming in the area when they were caught by the rapid surge of water brought by heavy rains in the upland areas.
“Wala kahibalo ang ilang mga ginikanan nila, murag nag-road trip lang sila,” a resident, Lilibeth Laurel, said.
“Actually, diri sa Bunguiao gahapon, walay ulan apan sa bukid nga bahin seguro kusog ang ulan busa dunay dakung pagbaha,” Barangay Bunguiao Chairman Leo Resurrecion said.
The strong current also carried away the boys’ motorcycle key and their shirts.
The boys were transported back to their barangay in Talon-Talon.
