A 41-year-old newly released inmate took his live-in partner in hostage and hacked his son in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City.
The incident took place evening on December 6, 2025.
When interviewed by GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak, the suspect has not given a definite answer to the motive of the hostage-taking.
He cited only that there is a threat to his life.
A video showed of the negotiation done by Barangay Basak Chairwoman Jasmine (Daday) Chan and Councilman Michael Dungog who coaxed the suspect to surrender past 8 p.m. on December 6.
A butcher knife used in hurting his 21-year-old son was seized.
Meanwhile, the son who sustained wounds on the stomach, chin, and arm was rushed to the hospital and is already out of danger, as of this writing.
Based on investigation conducted by the Lapu-Lapu City Police, the suspect was imprisoned for eight years because of his involvement in the illegal drugs trade. He was released from jail on December 1, 2025.
In an interview with GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak, the suspect said he used illegal drugs recently but regrets what he had done and is set to apologize to his son.
Since he was detained at the Lapu-Lapu City Police temporary custodial facility evening on December 6, he has not heard from his live-in partner and son.
The news team tried to get a comment from the suspect’s live-in partner but she has not replied yet to the team’s text messages and calls.
Charges for attempted parricide and serious illegal detention will be filed against the suspect.
Police Colonel Antonietto Cañete, officer in charge of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, thanked the two officials of Barangay Basak for their prompt response to the situation that led to the surrender of the suspect.
