Shoppers continue to flock to the open-air market and food strip in Dagupan City this holiday season, but police have warned the public to stay alert as cases of theft in the area happen almost every day.
Police said thieves have been taking advantage of the crowds, targeting both buyers and stall owners.
According to P/Lt. Daves Anastacio, Deputy Station Commander of DCPO Station 1, they receive theft reports almost daily.
“Halos araw-araw, mayroong nangyayaring theft in that particular area. ‘Yung mga nagre-report na nanakaw is nahahanap ng mga personnel ng PNP katulong po ‘yung mga barangay,” he said.
Because of this, stall owners have formed their own group to watch over the area, especially at night.
Imram Racman, a vendor, said they no longer leave their items unattended.
“‘Yung mga nabebenta namin, hindi namin iniiwan dito, dinadala namin sa bahay… May mga manpower kami na pinaroronda namin sa gabi at sa araw,” he said.
Police also patrol the area regularly, especially during peak hours.
Shoppers like Cora de Vera said they have learned to be more careful after experiencing theft in the market before. Now, she keeps her bag close to her chest.
“Dito ko hinahawakan, dito po, nasa harap ganun,” she said.
Authorities advised the public to avoid wearing or carrying valuables that may attract thieves.
Anastacio urged people to approach the police whenever needed.
“Ang kapulisan ay hindi dapat katakutan datapuwa’t dapat lapitan. Sa mga ganiyang pangyayari, huwag mahihiyang lumapit sa tanggapan ng kapulisan,” he said.
