A fire struck a house in Cordova, Cebu, including a deceased person on the third evening of her wake.

A lit mosquito coil that came in contact with an egg tray and a curtain is seen as the cause of the fire, according to FO1 Bemil Genaro Jr., fire investigator of the Cordova Fire Station.

Fire hit the house owned by the Baguio family in Sitio Sambagan, Barangay Pilipog past 5 p.m. on December 10, 2025.

Myrna Baguio Salazar, 57 years old, is in agony after losing her house, her 35-year-old daughter who was burned down along with the house.

As the fire spread quickly, Salazar said she rushed out of the house along with her husband who has challenges in mobility. Other members of the family were not able to lift the coffin out of the house.

Salazar said her concerns mounted when she was told to pay for the lights owned by the funeral homes that also burned down. She said she still has to settle payment for the coffin of her daughter. She has no permanent job. Her son ekes out a living by fishing.

Cordova Mayor Cesar (Didoy) Suan visited the affected family to hand over P10,000 to Salazar's mother, Andresa Baguio who owns the house; and P20,000 to Salazar's family as government assistance as they lost a loved one to the fire.

The Local Government Unit of Cordova also provided rice and canned goods to the family.

Suan vowed to send housing materials for the family to start rebuilding immediately.

According to Perlito Mahinay, head of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), members of the family who will help in the rebuilding will get P5,000.

Mahinay pointed out that the fund for the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) has already been utilized, being the yearend. However, he said the family will be referred to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7 for additional assistance.

Further, Salazar's daughter is disheartened that an individual who introduced himself as a video logger (vlogger) vowed to send her P20,000 in financial assistance. The scammer reportedly coaxed her to provide the One-Time PIN (Personal Identification Number), or OTP, and stole money from her electronic wallet (e-wallet).

Ludivina, the daughter, tried to call and send text messages to the scammer but he is already "out of reach."
