Eight persons died after a multicab fell into a ravine in Sitio Tumampon, Barangay Tiguib, Ayungon, Negros Oriental.
Five died on the spot, while three expired at the hospital.
Five others sustained injuries, including a child and the driver of the multicab identified as 56-year-old Juan Maratas.
Maratas is a resident of Barangay Bagacay, Dumaguete City.
Investigation revealed that the vehicle was carrying 20 passengers when it lost its brakes while ascending an elevated portion of a mountain highway on December 13, 2025.
The victims were in Sitio Tumampon for a funeral service.
The vehicle rolled reportedly three times, hitting boulders. Five persons were killed on the spot.
Among those who perished are a barangay health worker (BHW) in Barangay Tiguib and the wife of a barangay tanod (village watchman).
According to Tiguib Barangay Chairman Armando Pastor, the ravine is not that deep. However, because of the impact five died at once.
Seven sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to the Bindoy District Hospital but were moved immediately to another hospital in Dumaguete City.
Three were pronounced dead on arrival at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital.
As of this writing, four others are in critical condition, including the child and the driver.
One sustained minor injury and is confined at Bindoy District Hospital.
