As the nine-day Misa de Gallo (dawn Mass) starts, a tradition deemed the "bangaw" or "pagpamangaw" is attached to it.

While churchgoers were on their way to two major Roman Catholic churches in Cebu City, a family was seen tugging life-sized images of the Three Wise Men (or the magi, otherwise called "three kings") riding camels.

In the pagpamangaw, the three wise men were led to the church. The tradition of the pagpamangaw is done on all nine days toward Christmas Day.

“Ang kani camel, sa amo pa ning apohan, dugay na kaayo ni, natiguwang nako, akong mama, hangtod nga namatay…gipadayon sa akong mga anak,” according to Edith Kyamko who keeps the tradition.

Further, stringent security measures are implemented at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. The Pilgrim Center was packed with devotees for the Misa de Gallo at 4:30 a.m. on December 16, 2025.

The rector of the Basilica presided the Holy Mass. In his homily, he called on believers to prepare for Christmas in the spiritual aspect.

“Inig abot unta sa Pasko, 25, ang kahayag sa Ginoo anaa sa atong kasingkasing, dili unta kapungot, kasuko, pagdumot, ug kining pagkagarboso,” Fr. Andres Rivera, rector of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, said.

The Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral prohibits vehicles from entering its compound due to the swarm of churchgoers.

Two classmates, among a sea of churchgoers, made sure they would attend the Misa de Gallo with a fervent desire.

When asked if they are keen on attending all nine days, one said she will try.

“Paningkamotan,” Jea Sumbi, one of the students, said.

The other one, Ylessa Abella, said she petitions good health among members of her family and true happiness.

“Maayong panglawas sa pamilya and genuine happiness,” Abella said.

Meanwhile, Police Lt. Col. Jose Losbaños, spokesperson of the Cebu City Police Office, said that the first day of the Misa de Gallo is generally peaceful, highlighting coordination of various sectors to ensure peace and order.
