Several residents of Sison, Surigao del Norte have raised concerns over a section of a flood control mitigation project that collapsed after heavy rains caused flooding in November 2025.

A portion of the P87 million project gave way on November 25 after typhoons struck Barangay Mabuhay.

Residents expressed worry over the damage, especially as the water level and current of the Mabuhay River continue to rise.

According to one of the complainants, Wilbert Ga, residents have noticed cracks on the structure following heavy rains. That section of the project eventually collapsed in late November.

“After na nung bagyong Tino, so mga ilang araw na wala ng ulan, walang baha, wala naman malakas na baha, so normal lang ang takbo ng sapa doon walang activity (ng masira siya),” Ga said.

“Nag-umpisa na yung pagtrabaho ng contractor through yung backhoe nila ginagawa na nila,” he added.

It was learned that the construction of the structure started in 2021 and was completed in 2022.

GMA Regional TV One Mindanao is reaching out to the contractor for a statement, as of this writing.

The Department of Public Works and Highways-Caraga (DPWH-13) refused to comment, saying only DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon is authorized to speak on the matter.

Ga and his group have already filed a complaint before DPWH and the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI).

“Kailangan matrabaho kaagad kasi lalo na ngayon ang panahon umuulan hindi malaman kung may bagyo o ano pero tumataas ang tubig doon. Sabi nila malaking epekto sa kanila kapag tumaas ang tubig-baha,” Ga said.
