Authorities have confirmed that the gunmen in the Bondi Beach mass shooting in Sydney, Australia stayed in a hotel in Davao City for nearly a month.

A member of the hotel staff told GMA Regional TV One Mindanao that the suspects, 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed, checked in from November 1 to 28, 2025.

The hotel is located on Pichon Street, about 400 meters from the City Hall.

The staff member said the two displayed normal behavior and did not raise suspicion during their stay.

The hotel management has already turned over copies of its CCTV footage to the police.

According to the National Security Council (NSC), the elder Akram traveled using an Indian passport while his son, Naveed, used an Australian passport.

Despite their visit to the Philippines, authorities said there is no valid report confirming that the suspects underwent military or terrorist training in the country.

NSC added that since the 2017 Marawi Siege, groups in the Philippines affiliated to ISIS have been dismantled with remnants no longer capable of conducting operations.

NSC stressed that there have been no recorded terrorist training activities linked to ISIS in the country since 2017.

“Magbase lang ta sa facts on hand. Kung atong tan-awon, ang ilang pag-stay, technically speaking, transit lang… nilupad sa Manila, niagi diha sa Davao based sa (info) sa Immigration… ang importante, dili nila ma-execute ang, for example, allegedly, military-like training or any form of activities linking sa terrorist organization… dili na siya ma-execute,” 10th Infantry Division Spokesperson, Major Ruben Gadut, said.

The mass shooting in Australia killed 16 people and injured dozens more, according to authorities. The older Akram was killed at the scene while his son in in critical condition in the hospital, as of this writing.
