As families prepare meals and celebrate with shared feasts this holiday season, health authorities in Region 1 reminded the public to take extra care in preparing and serving food to avoid food poisoning.
The Center for Health Development (CHD) Region 1 warned that improper food preparation and storage remain among the most common causes of food poisoning, especially during Christmas and New Year celebrations when large amounts of food are prepared in advance.
CHD Region 1 spokesperson, Dr. Rheuel Bobis, stressed the importance of cleanliness from purchase to serving.
“Isa sa pinaka-common na reason kung bakit nagkakaroon ng food poison ang ating mga kababayan ay dahil sa maling preparation ng food at pagkasira ng ating mga pagkain. Paalala ng ating departamento na dapat malinis ang pagkakagawa mula sa pagbili hanggang pa-prepare at sa pag-serve ng pagkain,” he said.
In Mangaldan, Pangasinan, some residents chose to order food for their celebrations instead of cooking at home. Food vendors said they make sure their dishes are prepared properly to protect customers’ health.
Romulo Visperas, a cook, said cleanliness and proper cooking are crucial.
“Sa preparation pa lang dapat malinis at maayos na, tsaka ‘yung pagluluto dapat lutong-luto po talaga,” he said.
Fervic Narag, a parent, said ordering food is more practical for his family.
“Bumili na lang po kaysa magluto pa. Mas okey nang nakabili na lang, wala na kasing time,” he said.
Aside from food poisoning, health officials also warned against other common holiday-related health risks, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Authorities advised the public to eat in moderation and always consider their health while enjoying holiday gatherings.
