A police officer was arrested for firing his gun indiscriminately in Barangay Iponan, Cagayan de Oro City in the early hours of Christmas Day.
According to the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10), an investigation has been launched.
The police officer involved may face criminal and administrative charges.
PRO-10 condemned the incident, saying that any act that endangers the public – especially when committed by a member of the Philippine National Police – is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“Such behavior violates the law and goes against the values of discipline and professionalism expected of every police officer,” PRO-10 said.
The Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) said there was no reported injury or victims as a result of the gunfire.
“Wala ta’y reported nga mga injuries or nahimong biktima sa pagpabuto o sa buto nga nahitabo kagabie muna atong gisuta gyud nga ugaling naa’y balita o report insidente sa ilang tagsa-tagsa ka mga lugar report gyud immediately sa ilang nearest nga police station,” COCPO Spokersperson, Capt. Emilita Simon, said.
Aside from the indiscriminate firing incident, police said there were no recorded injuries from firecrackers or stray bullets in the city, prompting them to consider the Christmas celebration as “generally peaceful.”
“Mapasalamaton sa katawhan nga sa kanunay nagpabiling disiplinado ug matinud-anon sa balaod ug tungod niini na-celebrate ug naabli nato ang pasko nga wala ta’y mga dagkong insidente nga natala,” Simon added.
