A grieving family in Dagupan City is calling for justice after a Christmas Day explosion claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl.

The remains of Kathryn Chandrea Crespo lies at their home in Sitio Boquig, Barangay Bacayao Norte, as of this writing.

The child was one of two people killed in the explosion that rocked the area during the holiday. Her coffin remains sealed due to severe burn injuries.

Kathryn’s mother described her as a loving and cheerful child who cared deeply for her siblings.

“Gusto ko lang sabihin sa kaniya na mahal na mahal namin siya. Sana balang araw, bumalik siya sa amin,” Janet Crespo said.

The incident has caused severe emotional distress for the family. Kathryn, a Grade 1 pupil, is scheduled to be buried on January 2, 2026.

Her father, Jaycee Crespo, appealed for accountability.

“Kailangan namin ng justice para sa kaniya. Sana makamit namin ’yun,” he said.

Barangay officials also expressed shock over the incident, saying they were unaware that firecrackers were being stored in the area. Barangay Bacayao Norte Chairman Diosdado Maramba said they reminded residents repeatedly about safety rules, especially during the firecracker season.

“Palaging nagpapaalala sa kanila. Umiikot kami kasama ang PNP. Hindi kami nagkulang na nagpapaalala sa kanila,” Maramba said.

Authorities said the explosion damaged nearby houses, vehicles, and motorcycles, leaving debris scattered across the site. The exact cause of the blast remains unclear as police continue their investigation.

The owner of the house where the explosion occurred now faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple injuries, and damage to property, in connection with Republic Act 7183 or the Firecracker Law. The suspect remains hospitalized.

“Nasa ospital siya kasi sabi ng jailer, nagkaroon siya ng tubig sa baga,” PCOL. Orly Pagaduan, director of the Dagupan City Police Office said.

Efforts are ongoing to obtain the suspect’s statement as the investigation continues.
