Authorities are considering filing charges against members of an alleged religious group in Manay, Davao Oriental for blocking a portion of the road, which caused traffic congestion and inconvenience to motorists on Christmas Day.

Police said at least 11 members of the group called Iglesia ni Senior obstructed a portion of the road in Purok Basio, Barangay San Ignacio by placing large crosses and other religious materials.

This area is located near the group’s church.

The religious items reportedly made it difficult for vehicles to pass.

“Yung una nilang lagay ng religious paraphernalia, hindi talaga makadaan yung mga motorista kasi nag-encroach talaga siya sa kalsada. We are reviewing for cases to be filed against them; nire-review pa po namin. We are looking (at) public nuance,” Manay Municipal Police Station Chief, Major Ross Cabigas, said.

Authorities said the group allegedly claimed ownership of the area and demanded rent.

Police said the group has said the road blockade was meant to spread their belief that the end of the world is near.

It was learned that the members of the group are relatives.

Motorists reportedly tried to ask the group to clear the road but the group reportedly refused to heed, until authorities intervened.

“Pinakiusapan po namin sila ng maayos at nakinig naman po at voluntarily nilang tinabi ang gamit nila,” Cabigas added.

GMA Regional TV One Mindanao is reaching out to the group for a statement, as of this writing.
