Five people were arrested for violating the firecracker ban in Davao City.
Meanwhile, nearly 6,000 firecrackers were confiscated during the holiday season.
One of those arrested was a 16-year-old boy who admitted to lighting firecrackers in Sasa during the New Year celebration. The incident was caught on video.
The boy surrendered at the Sasa Police Station, including the female owner of the firecrackers.
Authorities recovered the firecrackers used in the incident.
The boy is now under the custody of the Women and Children’s Protection Desk while the owner of the firecrackers will face charges for violating the city’s Firecracker Ban Ordinance.
Police reiterated that the ordinance prohibits strictly the manufacture, sale, distribution, use, storage, and possession of firecrackers within the city.
“According to ma’am Althea, ma’am, ang fireworks nila is dili intended sa New Year… hinatag sa iyang client not coming from Davao Region then gitaguan niya sa iyang storage room then according sa iyaha nakita na lang niya nga gisindihan na sailang compound,” Sasa Police Station Chief, Major Noe Macolbacol Jr., said.
Authorities also seized various types of firecrackers while patrolling at the Sasa Public Market. However, the owner escaped.
Police also confiscated at least 14 improvised cannons called lantaka in Barangay Leon Garcia, Agdao.
Data from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) showed that as of 6 a.m. on January 2, five people have been arrested for violating the firecracker ban, which has been implemented in the city since 2002.
Authorities also reported that up to 6,114 firecrackers were seized.
