Transport authorities in Pangasinan have stepped up safety measures as they brace for a surge of passengers and motorists traveling back to their destinations ahead of the return to work and school next week.
Officials expect heavy travel from Friday, January 2, 2025, through the weekend, with classes and offices set to resume on Monday, January 5, 2026, after the holiday season. Bus terminals in Mangaldan have begun seeing increased passenger traffic, prompting heightened monitoring by authorities.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has set up motorist assistance desks along major roads and at transport terminals to guide travelers and respond to emergencies.
“Actually, halos lahat ng terminals ay mayroong mga help desk. Iba pa ‘yung sa nasa roadside para masigurado natin ang kaligtasan ng mga naglalakbay sa kakalsadahan,” Glorioso Daniel Martinez, director of LTO-1, said.
The LTO said it is monitoring public utility vehicles closely and enforcing the ban on overloading strictly. Authorities added there are no issues with vehicle availability, as the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) issued special permits that remain effective until the first week of January.
Motorists welcomed the presence of authorities on the road, saying it provides added security, especially during unexpected breakdowns or traffic incidents.
“Para rin ito sa safety ng mga pasahero. Mas okey na may mga nakabantay,” Elvira Muyano, a motorist, said.
The LTO also urged motorists to exercise patience, as traffic congestion is expected if travelers leave at the same time over the weekend. Authorities reminded the public to prioritize safety and follow traffic rules during the busy travel period.
