Local government units (LGUs) in Eastern Visayas suspended classes and work in the education sector on Monday, January 5, 2026 because of inclement weather.

Classes in all levels in both public and private, as well as work in the education sector are suspended in Almeria, Biliran due to poor weather condition, as advised by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. 

An executive order (EO) will follow, says the Almeria Public Information Office (PIO). 

Classes and work in the Department of Education (DepEd) in Maripipi, Biliran are cancelled on January 5 due to the continuous inclement weather.

Mayor Joseph  Canonoy Caingcoy has  issued Executive Order No. 001-2026 on the suspension of classes in all levels and work in DepEd offices to ensure the safety of all students, teachers, and staff. 

Further, classes and work in all levels of public schools in Caibiran, Biliran are suspended on  January 5, according to Mayor Rhodessa Delante-Revita on her Facebook post.

"EO to follow. Stay safe, Caibiran," Revita said. 

In Tacloban City, Mayor Alfred Romualdez signed Executive Order No. 2026-01-001, ordering the suspension of classes in all levels, both public and private schools on January 5.

"The class suspension is due to the effects of the ongoing shear line, which has brought continuous heavy rains and flooding in several parts of the city, posing risks to students and school personnel," said Tacloban City Information Office. 

The city government advises the public to remain alert, prioritize safety, and continue monitoring official advisories for further updates.

Here are other LGUs that suspended classes due to the effects of the shear line:

* Province of Eastern Samar - all levels, based on Governor Ralph Vincent Evardone's EO

* Province of Northern Samar - all levels, work in government offices (on January 5 only), based on Governor Harris Ongchuan's EO 

* Province of Samar - pre-school, elementary, secondary (Junior and Senior) levels in all public and private schools, based on Governor Sharee Ann Tan's EO
