At least 37 families were displaced after a fire hit a residential area in Barangay Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City evening on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
The fire broke out in Sitio San Roque past 8 p.m. and was raised to fourth alarm.
Authorities said the fire spread quickly as most of the houses affected were made of light materials and built close to one another.
According to the Lapasan Fire Station, firefighters responded immediately as they were on their way to conduct a water rationing activity in a nearby sitio when the incident happened. However, they had difficulty penetrating the area because of the narrow road.
The fire was put out shortly before midnight.
“Tungod kay sa strategic sa atong area which is informal settler so dikit-dikit ang mga balay that’s why gi-raise nato diretso ang alarm para ma-contain nato ang kalayo,” Lapasan Fire Station Investigator, FO2 Angelu Daisog, said.
The cost of damage was estimated at around P1 million while investigation continues to determine the cause of the fire.
One of the residents affected was injured after sustaining burns on the foot while attempting to help extinguish the fire.
“Under investigation pa gyud ta as to the cause but as to origin, nagsugod gyud siya sa second floor sa may balay ni Sir Rogelio Sumalinog mao to ang atong ginalantaw-lantaw nga anggulo nga ilang allegedly kuan daw kuno electrical connection,” Daisog added.
The residents affected have taken shelter temporarily at the barangay covered court.
The local government has begun profiling the families affected so they can be given assistance.
“So ang atoang barangay, as a matter of protocol, basta naa gani sunog, diretso dayun gi-alerto nato ang office of the barangay treasurer, ang office of the community kitchen, para sa pag-prepare sa mga pagkaon sa atong mga biktima sa sunog,” Barangay spokesperson, Jeofrey Baconga, said.
