Authorities disposed of nearly P100,000 worth of illegal firecrackers confiscated in Misamis Oriental during the holiday season.
Among the confiscated firecrackers were piccolo, judas belt, five star, and butterfly, which are considered illegal under existing regulations.
Authorities also confiscated firecrackers that were allowed for sale but were being sold by retailers without proper permits or without the required labeling.
“Kini atong i-dispose nakuha nako sa western part sa Opol, Initao and Manticao AOR,” Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office Director, Col. Al Abanales, said.
In a separate operation, the PNP Regional Civil Security Unit-10 (RCSU-10) also confiscated illegal firecrackers sold in different parts of Northern Mindanao.
Among the firecrackers seized were improvised PVC pipe cannon called boga, which is strictly prohibited.
To prevent the prohibited firecrackers from being reused or resold, police disposed of the items through controlled detonation by the Explosives Ordnance Division at a dumping area inside the police provincial headquarters.
Authorities said that due to the successful confiscation of illegal firecrackers, the province recorded zero firecracker-related injuries.
“Pero kung ito hindi nakumpiska, basin may isang na injured diha sayang ang life sabi nga ng prayer kanina we are securing the life and property yun ang hinaut ng public safety ng DILG,” RCSU-10 Chief, Col. Jeffrey Bilaro, said.
Meanwhile, the Police Regional Office-SOCCSKSARGEN (PRO-12) also destroyed thousands of illegal firecrackers, improvised cannons, and prohibited items confiscated during the holiday season in the region.
The items confiscated were destroyed by soaking them in a drum filled with water to render them unusable.
Authorities destroyed a total of 5,885 assorted firecrackers, most of which were seized after being sold outside the designated firecracker selling areas in General Santos City.
Police also confiscated firecrackers from two people who were selling the items online.
“We can conclude, that the campaign is successful. We have arrested two persons selling firecrackers thru social media…meron na file na case,” Col. Amante Suriaga, chief of the PRO-12 Regional Operations Division, said.
Police also destroyed 59 open pipe motorcycle mufflers and 81 improvised cannons called boga.
Based on data from the Department of Health-SOCCSKSARGEN (DOH-12), around 120 firecracker-related injuries were recorded in the region as of 8 a.m. of January 6, 2026, which is 20 percent higher compared to the 100 cases logged in 2024.
Of the total number, 14 cases were reported in General Santos City.
