A couple was killed while their nephew is in critical condition, as of this writing, after the tricycle they were riding crashed into a truck in General Santos City on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
According to the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) of the General Santos City Police Office (GSCPO), the tricycle and the truck were traveling in opposite directions when the incident happened.
Upon reaching a curve portion of the road, the tricycle allegedly encroached into the truck’s lane, which resulted in the collision.
“Based on the investigation conducted, the tricycle is kung titingnan natin yung daan diyan is pa-curve siya, so the tricycle is traversing from Mabuhay going to Sinawal roundball, traversing on both inner lanes. Ngayon si tricycle, nag-encroach siya doon sa lane ni truck na nagresulta ng collision to the left side portion of its vehicle, tinamaan yung left portion ni truck,” TEU Chief, Lt. Col. Patrich Elma, said.
Because of the impact, the 51-year-old tricycle driver was pinned to his seat while his 52-year-old wife, a teacher, and their 38-year-old nephew were thrown into the road.
“Ang driver ang right side na paa ay naputol, sa likod, ang babae lumipad papunta sa gilid at saka nabali din ang kanyang kamay, at ang isang pasahero din na lalaki, lumipad at nabali din ang isang kamay niya din,” a witness, Johnroy Carator, said.
The victims were brought to a hospital. However, the couple died after a few hours.
Authorities believe the tricycle may have been running at high speed at that time.
“It could be overspeeding, kung titingnan natin ang impact ng sasakyan, nagkaroon nga yung tricle na-pressed sicya,” Elma added.
The truck driver was unharmed. He may face charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and serious physical injury.
“Pag encroach ng tricycle hindi niya naiwasan kasi on his right portion meron ding vehicle so ang ginawa niya na- slow down na lang siya at yun nga tumama pa rin yung tricycle sa kanyang left side portion,” Elma said.
An amicable settlement between the two parties continues, as of this writing.
