A man was injured after saving his dogs during a fire in Barangay Puntod, Cagayan de Oro City.
The fire broke out around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
At least four houses were razed to the ground.
While firefighters were busy putting out the fire, a resident, Jake Binondo, went back inside his burning house to rescue his trapped pets.
Binondo suffered burns on both hands and his face.
Two of his dogs, Ponyo and Snoopy, were rescued safely. Both were traumatized, with Ponyo sustaining burns.
“So, nibalik gyud ko without thinking nga nag-risk na diay ko sa akong kinabuhi ingon sa akong mga ig-agaw basin ma-suffocate daw ko o maunsa daw ko sa sulod pero wala na sa akong huna-huna. Akong gihuna-huna nga ma-save to sila,” Binondo said.
However, Binondo’s three other dogs died.
“Unfortunately, lang ang duha ra gyud ang akong na-save ang tulo ka iro wala na gyud sila among mga iro man gud naa ra sa sala ba free bitaw kayo tapad namo matulog. Then ang tulo man gud kanang mga babae ba so once maka-feel sila og panic manago gyud sila sa sofa and isa sa c.r.,” Binondo added.
Binondo is now seeking financial assistance to cover medical care for his dogs, especially Ponyo.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the fire was raised to third alarm and was put out around 11 p.m.
The cost of damage was estimated at P380,000.
“As of now ang cause ongoing pa ang among investigation in fact gahapon mibalik mi didto nangita pami og sample evidence sa electrical wirings,” Macabalan Fire Station Investigator, SFO2 Jesreel Lasaga, said.
