At least 12 employees of a private landfill facility have been extricated from a collapsed structure in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City, and rushed to the hospital.

One fatality was confirmed, while 34 individuals remain missing, according to an updated situation report posted by Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival morning on Friday, January 9, 2026.

Archival has assured that search, rescue, and retrieval operations are ongoing with extensive multi-agency support on the ground.

The landslide incident occurred at 4:17 p.m. on January 8, involving at least 110 employees of the landfill facility.

“Continuous care is being provided to all hospitalized victims to address their medical needs. The City Government is also extending burial assistance and necessary support to the family of the deceased, a 22-year-old woman,” Archival added.

“The City Government assures the public and the families of those affected that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety, transparency, accountability, and compassionate assistance as operations continue,” the mayor also said.

In a video on his Facebook page evening on January 8, Archival said responders are working very carefully so as not to injure further those still trapped under the rubble.

Based on initial investigation, up to 98 workers were at the site when the landslide hit and the structure collapsed. At least 63 have returned to their families that evening of the incident.

In a Facebook post, Archival said he has spoken with the landfill management representatives who have assured support for the workers and their families.

The management also assured cooperation with authorities and said the safety and well-being of its employees, contractors, and neighboring communities remain its top priority.
