The death toll in the landslide that occurred at a private landfill facility in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City increased to three persons within a 24-hour rescue operation.
Mayor Nestor Archival said that as of 6 p.m. on Friday, January 9, 2026, the number of missing landfill facility workers hit 36, while two have been confirmed dead.
The second body retrieved on January 9 at 4:45 p.m. is that of a 25-year-old sub-contract engineer of Prime Waste Solutions, the company that operates the landfill facility.
In addition, the Bureau of Fire Protection Cebu City said that the body of a woman was retrieved at 6:35 p.m.
According to GMA Super Radyo Cebu's report, the body was turned over to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Forensics for processing and identification.
Further, Archival said that based on the latest validation, 31 missing persons are employees of Prime Waste Solutions, while five are employees of a subcontractor.
Search and rescue operations have been intensified to locate the remaining 35, with the assurance of careful and safe operation as a priority.
A mountain of garbage in the said facility slid, similar to a landslide, that led to the collapse of a structure which pinned employees under the rubble.
