Response efforts continue at the private landfill facility in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City where at least four people died following a landslide on January 8, 2026.
At least 35 workers remain missing, as of this writing. At least 13 others have been rescued as of January 9.
In an update on its Facebook page, the Cebu City Public Information Office said a 50-ton crane “will be utilized for heavy lifting and debris-clearing operations to help accelerate rescue activities at the site.”
The city said rescue teams from APEX Mining in Davao de Oro have arrived to provide additional manpower and technical expertise.
“As of this update, the status remains Search and Rescue, with authorities underscoring the importance of proper coordination among all responding agencies to ensure the safety of rescuers and maximize all available resources in the ongoing operation,” the city said.
Helping city personnel and those from other agencies in search and rescue are the Joint Task Group Cebu (JTG Cebu), the 53rd Engineer Brigade (53EBde) of the Philippine Army, the Tactical Operations Wing Central (TOWCEN), and the 560th Air Base Group of the Philippine Air Force deployed by the Visayas Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
On Saturday, January 10, almost two days since the landslide, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival and Councilor Dave Tumulak led a coordination meeting with Prime Waste Solutions together with the Philippine National Police Forensic Group, the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO), the Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS), and other concerned agencies to assess the situation and strengthen coordination efforts.
