Two more bodies were retrieved from the collapsed structure at the landfill facility in Binaliw, Cebu City, bringing to six the number of fatalities as of morning of January 11, 2026, almost three days after a landslide hit the structure in the landfill late afternoon on January 8.
The Cebu City Public Information Office, in a social media post, said the latest victims found were identified initially as Jane, 39, and Armi, 43.
As of this writing, 30 remain missing. Twelve survivors are recuperating at the hospital.
The PIO said authorities have clarified “that the updated figures are based on ongoing validation, as some individuals initially listed were later confirmed not to have been in the affected area during the incident.”
Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Earlier, Mayor Nestor Archival said the “focus window” is between January 9 to January 11 during which responders hope to locate those missing.
Around 500 responders have been deployed to the site. On January 10, a 50-ton crane arrived at the landfill to assist in the retrieval operations.
Rescue work is being undertaken slowly and carefully due to safety risks, including methane gas, unstable ground, and the possibility of fire or collapse if heavy equipment is used improperly.
Archival said search and rescue are the top priority and investigations into possible lapses will be undertaken afterwards.
WASTE DISPOSAL
Meanwhile, because collection and disposal of waste were disrupted by the incident, the city has coordinated with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for options.
Possible temporary disposal sites include areas in neighboring Consolacion and Minglanilla towns.
The city said it is prepared to shoulder the cost of disposal as needed and is looking at a 15-day temporary solution.
