No oil spill was reported, as of this writing, after a Philippine-flagged motor tanker ran aground along the shoreline of Barangay Poblacion 1, Burgos, Surigao del Norte.
Based on investigation, the vessel was carrying 3,500 liters of diesel for consumption, and was heading to Homonhon, Leyte from Cagayan de Oro City when the incident happened.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the vessel experienced engine trouble around 1 p.m. on January 10, 2026, prompting the vessel’s master to order the vessel to anchor.
However, the vessel drifted and ran aground along the shoreline due to strong currents and big waves.
PCG said no oil spill was observed in the area, as of this writing. However, technical assessment and verification are still ongoing, including the determination of possible hull breach to ensure marine environmental protection.
“At approximately 4:30AM, joint authorities ensured the safety of nine Filipino crew members, including the master, who were brought ashore for further assistance and investigation,” PCG Spokesperson, Capt. Noemie Cayabyab, said.
PCG added that all crew members were unharmed.
“At around 7:50AM today, the PCG coordinated towing operations for the aground vessel. An agent initiated arrangements to secure a towing boat operator, in coordination with the vessel’s company,” PCG added.
