The death toll in the collapse of a mountain of garbage in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City has continued to rise.
Two more bodies were retrieved on Monday, January 12, 2026, according to the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), which brings the number of casualties to eight.
A mountain of garbage at a private landfill facility slid, similar to a landslide, and led to the collapse of a structure used as an office and production facility. The incident occurred afternoon on January 8.
A total of 28 persons are still missing, as of this writing.
Members of the victim’s respective families call on further intensified search and rescue operations, as they continue to hope against hope that their loved ones are still alive.
In the case of the 25-year-old victim, James Carl Andrino, his father said his son was still alive a few hours after the landslide.
Reymond Andrino, the father, said he was able to talk to his son, and that it was his son who tried to calm him down, citing he would make it out alive.
However, after 15 hours, his son died at around 7 a.m. on Friday, January 9. His body was extricated by 4 p.m. that day.
Another person retrieved was identified as Rowena Ranido. Her wake is set in Barangay Binaliw, as her family awaits news on her sibling who is among employees still trapped in the collapsed structure.
Rowena worked reportedly at the Human Resource (HR) Office of the landfill facility. Her husband has called on the company for immediate assistance for their three children.
Further, the kin of the 28 missing persons continue to watch tirelessly for the latest development in the rescue operations at Ground Zero. They have continued to plea for a faster search and rescue operations.
The Local Government Unit of Cebu City said it has done the best it could to locate and remove the workers from the wreck, but there are factors to be considered carefully so as not to aggravate the situation.
