Mango farms in Calasiao, Pangasinan were affected by a cecid fly infestation, prompting local agriculture officials to intensify monitoring and advise growers on early control measures.
The Calasiao Municipal Agriculture Office said the pest, also known locally as armalite, nora-nora, or saksak-walis, is one of the most destructive insects that attack mango trees. Officials warned that the infestation could cause losses to growers if not addressed early.
Rosemarie Primicias, High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) coordinator of the Calasiao Municipal Agriculture Office, said damage remains limited, so far, but requires close attention.
“Sa ngayon po meron na po tayong at least 30% po lamang ang reported damage ng infestation, hindi pa ganoon kalala. Continuous spraying, lalo na po sa mga cecid fly. Iyon din kasi isa sa talagang pinaka kalaban ng mga mango growers natin dito sa Calasiao,” she said.
Agriculture officers advised farmers to practice fruit bagging, or wrapping mango fruits with paper, to protect them from pests. They also urged growers to bury fallen fruits, noting that the smell of rotting mangoes attracts insects.
Ariel Arenas, a mango grower, described the damage caused when fruits are left unprotected.
“Bingalngal, tarakitik, nababangot, kulang sa gamot. Pag hindi na balot, masisira, basag na. Pinapasok ng insekto, mga tarakitik na maliliit, nabubutas iyon, sira na agad,” he said.
The Municipal Agriculture Office said it continues to monitor mango farms and regularly advises growers on proper treatment for pests and plant diseases. Farmers were encouraged to report any infestation immediately.
Primicias said affected growers may seek assistance from their office.
“Magtungo po sila dito sa office para magawan ng written report at i-submit namin sa regional office natin para mabigyan sila ng kung ano po mga interventions or inputs na puwedeng maibigay sa kanila,” she said.
