Frost or “andap” continued to affect several highland areas in Benguet, according to the latest monitoring by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
PAGASA said frost was observed not only in parts of Atok, Benguet but also in areas of Mankayan, Buguias, Kibungan, and even sections of Mount Pulag in Kabayan. The weather agency said these areas are prone to frost when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius.
“Kasi may frost project ang PAGASA at ‘yun ang mga munisipyo kung saan nakakaranas sila ng mga andap kapag ganitong mga temperature na bumaba sa 10 degree celsius,” Engr. Larry Esperanza, chief meteorological officer of PAGASA Baguio Station, said.
PAGASA warned that frost conditions may continue in high-elevation areas as the coldest period of the amihan season has not yet peaked. The agency said temperatures in Baguio City may drop to single digits, around nine degrees Celsius, by the third or last week of January.
In higher parts of the province, temperatures may fall further to around six to seven degrees Celsius.
“Actually, January-February kasi ang lowest natin na na re-record, at according sa forecast ng PAGASA, itong January ang lowest natin pero sa ngayon nasa middle of January pa lang tayo,” Esperanza said.
In Kibungan, farmers said they are closely monitoring the weather due to possible effects of frost on vegetable crops. They said they remain on alert, especially during the early morning hours when temperatures are lowest.
“Kapag gabi na malamig na lalo na kapag madaling araw, kaya naka-monitor kami,” Ruel Laroya, a farmer, said.
As of Monday, January 12, 2026, PAGASA recorded a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius in Baguio City.
