At least 45 volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes were recorded on Mount Kanlaon from 12 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
Intensity I to IV was felt in La Carlota City, Bago City, and Bacolod City in Negros Occidental, and Canlaon City in Negros Oriental.
PHIVOLCS said that the VTs indicate magmatic gas pushing the magma upward from the depths of the volcano.
The activity may result in phreatic eruptions to moderately explosive eruptions, PHIVOLCS added.
“Nagsi-signal na meron namang intrusion or may umaakyat na namang magma mula sa ilalim ng bulkan. And it’s making its way paakyat sa ating surface ng ating bulkan. Kaya may naitalang pagyanig,” said Engr. Mari-Andylene Quintia, resident volcanologist at Kanlaon Observatory.
