The Cagayan de Oro City Council has approved an ordinance that would pave the way for the modernization of the city’s traffic system.

The ordinance would allow the local government unit to enter into a memorandum of agreement with a Singapore-based company offering an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted traffic management system.

Councilor Eric Salcedo said the collaboration would also allow the pilot implementation of the advanced system at no cost to the city government.

Salcedo, the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) overseer, said this is a significant step toward the city’s growth.

Once the initiative pushes through, the city can use the state-of-the-art technology that would solve traffic woes.

“Dagan sa trapiko, dagan sa peace and order tanan gwapo kayo ni siya pero ato sab tan-awon kay ako pabor ko ha personally pero kinahanglan man pud konsultahon pud nato ang mga stakeholder,” Salcedo said.

Salcedo added that the current traffic system is long overdue for an upgrade, as most of the traffic lights in the city only have a 10-year lifespan and many were installed in 2014.

Salcedo also emphasized the need to implement modern CCTV systems not just at traffic lights.

“Balansehon nato kay kana siya wala’y gasto ang syudad ato ha kana nga proposal but ang ato lang kay basin tan-awon nato kung dili ba burden ra pud sa mga negosyante,” Salcedo added.
