At least 30 passengers were rescued from a distressed vessel in the waters off Taganak, Tawi-Tawi evening on Friday, January 16, 2026.

Personnel of the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) sighted a flashing light while conducting a routine maritime patrol about 46 miles east of Taganak.

WMNC said the vessel’s rudder was damaged while navigating rough seas due to bad weather.

All passengers – 16 men, nine women, and five children. They were turned over to the local government on Saturday and were given assistance, including food, water, and medical support.

“The Western Mindanao Naval Command underscores its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives at sea and ensuring maritime safety within its area of responsibility. This successful operation highlights the Philippine Navy’s vigilance and readiness in responding to maritime emergencies, particularly in remote and high-risk maritime areas,” WMNC said.
