The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Cebu City supports the investigation that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) would conduct in relation to the deadly trash slide, following the retrieval of the last missing worker.
All 36 workers who perished in the trash slide at a private landfill facility in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City were accounted for early morning on Sunday, January 18, 2026, or hours away to the formal opening of the Sinulog festivity.
In over 10 days of search, rescue and retrieval operations, the body of the 36th missing person was retrieved at 5:41 a.m. on January 18.
Prime Waste Solutions, Cebu is the operator of the landfill facility where the trash slide occurred on January 8, causing the collapse of a structure used as an office and production facility.
The structure pinned several employees under the metal wreck and buried other 36 workers alive.
Of the 18 workers injured, 14 have been dispensed from the hospital, as of this writing.
The LGU and teams of responders from various agencies express fulfillment that their goal to have all 36 accounted for hours away to the opening of the Sinulog Festival 2026 was achieved.
As the Sinulog festivity is over, the LGU vowed to shift its focus now to the investigation, citing that there has to be persons accountable for the tragic incident.
The LGU, along with various government agencies, is also set to attend further to the needs of the surviving families and the affected workers.
