A rider was killed while his companion was injured after the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a taxi that made a sudden U-turn on Mother of Perpetual Help Avenue in Barangay Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City evening on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

According to the Traffic Enforcement Unit, the motorcycle and the taxi were both traveling in the same direction when the taxi reportedly made an abrupt U-turn, causing the motorcycle to crash into the front wheel of the vehicle.

The impact threw the victims off the motorcycle, killing the rider and injuring his companion.

“Nalagpot siya, murag fatal siya ang iyang ulo, so far walay helmet didto nga nakita. Naa pud nag-ingon nga wala daw helmet,” Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) Investigator, Master Sergeant Rodgen Canque, said.

The 57-year-old taxi driver was taken into police custody after the incident. He was seen emotionally distressed and apologetic as he admitted that his mistake led to the fatal accident.

“Pasensya gyud sa ingon ana nga panghitabo di man gyud nato malikayan wala gyud nako tuyua,” the taxi driver said.

The taxi driver may face charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, serious physical injury and damage to property.

A meeting between the taxi driver and the families of the victims is being arranged.

“Kinahanglan gyud nga magmatngon gyud ta sa atong pagmaneho sa atong sakyanan labi na ning motor,” Canque said.
