A traffic enforcer was placed under preventive suspension after he was caught on video allegedly extorting money from a rider who committed a traffic violation in Cagayan de Oro City.

In the video captured by a rider, he was passing through a road marked “No Entry” in Barangay Macasandig. He was then flagged down by a traffic enforcer from the city’s Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) and informed him of his violation.

The enforcer asked for the rider’s driver’s license while the latter pleaded for consideration.

Their conversation continued at another corner of the street where they allegedly agreed that the rider would not be issued a ticket in exchange for P200.

Later, the rider was seen opening his motorcycle’s U-box and took out his wallet. He then handed cash to the enforcer while taking back his license.

The video went viral online and drew mixed reactions from netizens until it reached the attention of the RTA office.

RTA overseer, City Councilor Eric Salcedo, said the enforcer was summoned immediately and placed under preventive suspension.

If proven that the enforcer accepted, demanded, or solicited money from traffic violators, he may be dismissed from service.

“While ongoing ang investigation, wala sa siya’y duty hangtod nga naa’y final nga desisyon sa investigation,” Salcedo said.

Because of the incident, RTA reiterated its policy prohibiting extortion.

“Atong hangyuon ang mga nabiktima nga tabangan nila ang RTA nga mulungtad sila kung kinsa tung mga nabiktima ug ato pud hangyuon nga dili sila kung naa’y mangutong syempre masalaan gihapon kay naa man uban nga mag-offer na lang (og kwarta sa enforcer),” Salcedo added.
