The local government of Cagayan de Oro City has formed a composite team to intensify its campaign against illegal improvised mufflers and activities linked to illegal drag racing.
The group is composed of personnel from the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO), Land Transportation Office (LTO), and Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA).
The initiative aims to apprehend motorcycles and vehicles that are using illegal mufflers on their vehicles.
RTA overseer, Councior Eric Salcedo, said the move is a response to the growing problem of excessively noisy vehicles in the city, particularly during late hours of the night.
Salcedo added that authorities have received several complaints from various sectors, especially in areas where vehicles with loud exhaust pipes were reported.
Some of these vehicles were also allegedly involved in illegal drag racing.
“Kung atong tan-awon ang ordinansa gi-revisit na nato unya atong padak-an ang ordinansa gikan sa P500 raman gud na i-maximize nato into P5,000. Karon ang naa’y katungod sab sa pag-impound ana ang LTO,” Salcedo said.
With the creation of the group, surprise inspections will be conducted in different parts of the city where erring motorists are commonly spotted.
Under the law, vehicle noise levels must not exceed 99 decibels when measured at half a meter from the exhaust pipe.
“Kining kasaba ug kining drag race saba sa motor, style man gud aning mga batan-on nga naa’y motor magtapok-tapok sila, magdungan og andar, grabe ka saba. Gawas lugar sa drag race grabe gyud kasaba,” Salcedo added.
The campaign also aims to prevent accidents caused by illegal drag racing.
