Technical divers and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) will help in the search and rescue operations for the missing passengers of the ill-fated M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 that sank in the waters of Basilan.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson, Capt. Noemie Cayabyab, said the deployment is part of PCG’s efforts to locate the vessel and the missing passengers.
PCG clarified that there were 344 people—317 passengers and 27 crew members—on board the vessel when the incident happened.
Up to 332 passengers were expected to board the vessel originally, but 15 did not proceed with their scheduled trip.
At least 18 people were confirmed dead, and 10 others remain missing, according to Department of Transportation (DOTr) as of evening on Monday, January 26.
“PCG Technical Divers were dispatched to conduct underwater search operations in identified areas of interest, while the ROV was employed to assist in deep-water inspections and enhance search capabilities in areas that pose risks to human divers,” Cayabyab said.
PCG added that with advanced underwater technology, rescuers will be able to survey submerged areas with limited visibility and challenging sea conditions safely and effectively.
PCG also said that the data gathered through the ROV will provide vital visual information to guide ongoing search efforts and operational decision-making.
Technical divers and the vehicle have arrived in Zamboanga City evening on Tuesday and are set to dive in the waters off Basilan on Wednesday.
