Personnel of the Coast Guard Station Sultan Kudarat have evacuated around 350 families from the coastal and high-risk areas in Lebak town after a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Kalamansig town around 1:05 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the tremor had a depth of 19 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.
Instrumental intensities were recorded in the following areas:
Intensity IV - Lebak, and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat
Intensity III - Norala, SOUTH COTABATO; Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat
Intensity II - M'lang and Pikit, COTABATO; Maitum, Malungon, Saragani; Tantangan, City of Koronadal, Banga, Tupi, Surallah, Tampakan, and Santo Nino, South Cotabato; Isulan, Columbio, and Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat
Intensity I - Kadingilan, Bukidnon; Maasim, Alabel, Sarangani; Zamboanga City
In response to the tremor and ongoing aftershocks, Coast Guard personnel conducted preemptive evacuation in Barangay Tibpuan and other coastal areas in Lebak town as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.
Families evacuated are taking shelter temporarily in designated evacuation centers in Barangay Pasandalan and Barangay Poloy-Poloy.
The provincial government has suspended classes in all levels, both public and private, and work in government offices in the towns of Kalamansig, Lebak, and Palimbang until further notice on Wednesday, January 28, except for offices and personnel involved in essential services, disaster response, health services, and emergency operations.
Authorities advised residents to stay alert, avoid damaged or unstable structures, and prepare for possible aftershocks.
