Three teenagers were rescued after they got lost while hiking on a mountain in San Nicolas, Pangasinan, police said.
The three boys, 17 to 18 years old, met in front of the San Nicolas municipal hall early afternoon on January 24, 2026 and had snacks before deciding to go up Pisi-Bato, a mountain located in Barangay San Nicolas East. Police said the group started climbing at around 3 p.m.
At about 8 p.m., the parents of one of the teenagers went to the San Nicolas police station to ask for help after losing contact with the group.
Authorities launched a joint search and rescue operation immediately involving the San Nicolas Police, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and barangay officials.
After nearly three hours of searching, rescuers found the three teenagers.
Police said location data sent by one of the students helped rescuers pinpoint their position.
“Na-obtain ng ating kasamahan sa (PNP) at sa MDRRMO ang grid coordinates kasi nag-send ’yung isang estudyante sa parents niya ’yung location through phone,” PMaj. George Banayos Jr., chief of the San Nicolas Police Station, said.
Authorities said the teenagers were unharmed and were brought back to their families.
Following the incident, police urged residents planning to hike in the mountainous areas of San Nicolas to coordinate with authorities beforehand to ensure safety.
Police said the terrain and weak mobile signal in the area pose risks to hikers, especially those unfamiliar with the mountain trails.
“Kasi kung pumunta ka doon at hindi ka familiar, talaga maliligaw ka talaga dahil sa haba ng cogon grass, difficult din ang navigation at signal,” Banayos said.
