The number of fatalities from the ill-fated M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, which sank off Baluk-Baluk Island, Basilan, has climbed to 40 after more bodies were recovered over the weekend, including that of a member of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

In a statement, PCG said the body of Seaman First Class Alkhaizar Hadjail was retrieved on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

PCG spokesperson, Capt. Noemie Cayabyab, said Hadjail was assisting and directing passengers on what to do for their safety while the vessel was in distress, based on accounts from survivors.

“Accounts from survivors indicate that, while the vessel was in distress, SN1 Hadjail assisted and directed passengers on the appropriate actions to take for their safety amid the maritime emergency,” Cayabyab said.

Cayabyab also clarified that the Hadjail’s family had been informed consistently of the developments of the search and rescue (SAR) efforts.

PCG added that the Coast Guard Intelligence Force (CGIF), the unit where Hadjail was assigned, conducted separate and focused SAR operations dedicated to locating him, parallel to the broader SAR efforts related to the maritime incident.

“The search for our fallen Coast Guard personnel, along with the continued efforts to locate other missing passengers and crew members, is pursued with utmost commitment and professionalism, guided by our duty to the public and to the families who place their trust in us,” Cayabyab said.

PCG also extended necessary assistance, including support for claims and other needs, to Hadjail’s family.

“At this time, the PCG appeals for understanding and compassion as the bereaved family grieves. The PCG, through a designated Survivor Petty Officer, extends all necessary assistance, including support for claims and other needs, and will continue to provide aid during this difficult period,” Cayabyab added.

Meanwhile, PCG clarified that the death toll has risen to 40, not 39 as reported by the agency earlier.

According to the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM), the adjustment accounts for one additional cadaver, a six-month-old baby girl, who was turned over to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Basilan on January 26, 2026.

At least 316 survived the tragedy.
