The Philippine Heart Association (PHA) has launched a program to address a shortage of cardiologists in Mindanao.

Cardiologists gathered during a national convention in Cagayan de Oro City to discuss new approaches in treating patients with heart or cardiovascular disease.

PHA said cardiovascular diseases is the leading cause of death not just in the Philippines but worldwide.

PHA president, Dr. Walid Amil, said the association has around 2,500 members, nearly half of whom are based in Manila.

However, some areas in Mindanao reportedly have no cardiologists.

“There are still areas all over the country, large provinces, na wala pa talagang cardiologist. That is another challenge for us,” Amil said.

To address the concern, PHA launched “Project One Cardiologist in Every City,” which aims to expand coverage in Mindanao by subdividing large chapters into smaller groups to deliver PHA programs and services to remote communities.

“Those with large chapter gusto natin e-subdivide into smaller groups para mas ma-focus ang ating dissemination ng programs ng PHA sa mga remote areas,” Amil added.

PHA targets to assign a cardiologist in Tawi-Tawi in the first quarter of 2026.

PHA wants to ensure that no patient dies due to lack of access to heart care.

The association also urged patients with heart conditions to take their prescribed medications regularly and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
